War of 1812: Captain Anthony Van Sickles' Company of Mason County Riflemen, Virginia Militia, 2nd Regiment. Source: History of Great Kanawha Valley, Vol. 1, pp. 263-4.

"From a population of barely 1,900, Mason County sent four companies to war. First called forth just days after the declaration of war, was Captain Anthony Van Sickle's Mason County [54] Riflemen...they were called to arms in April 1812 and spent the next several months readying for war...The Virginia Brigade set out [crossing the Ohio River ] from Point Pleasant on October 20th, 1812. They marched west to Chillicothe [Ohio], then north...more or less following present-day US Route 23. In Delaware [Ohio], they met several Shawnee chieftains...were joined by several Wyandotte chiefs, and peace was made with them as well...on February 1st, 1813, they reached the Maumee Rapids and joined the other half of the army [began erecting a fort]...By the end of March, Fort Meigs [Perrysburg, Ohio] was finished.
It was the construction of that fort that claimed only three Mason County casualties of the war...they were buried at Fort Meigs...The Virginia Brigade was discharged once construction was finished. The Mason County Riflemen began their march home on April 15th, a mere two weeks before the British laid siege to Fort Meigs with a resulting 160 killed and 630 captured." source: Soldiery of West Virginia, Virgil Lewis.

In 1787, Anthony's sister, Christena Van Sickles, married Henry VanMatre, Jr. in Redstone (Old Fort), Fayette [Greene] Co., Pennsylvania. Christina Van Sickle VanMatre and Henry Van Matre, Jr.,(1776-1857) removed to Mason County, WV, circa 1800. Eleven children. Henry Van Matre, Jr. is buried in Mason County, WV.

Prior to purchasing land in Mason County, [West] Virginia, the VanSickles and VanMatre men were leasing farmland in Greene County, PA. Beginning in 1800, they converted the Mason County, WV, marshland along Oldtown Creek to farmland by engineering levees and drainage to expose rich bottom land. They were motivated by the prospect of owning their own farms in Mason County, [West] Virginia.

From The Weekly Register, Point Pleasant, Mason County, WV:
In 1799, Anthony Van Sickle purchased land from his father-in-law, Henry Van Matre Sr., on Oldtown Creek and moved his family to Mason County in 1800.

Anthony (son of Zachariah Van Sickles? and Rosanna Buckley?)
1st wife: ?(possibly a different daughter of Henry Van Matre, Sr. and Martha Moore) in Redstone, Fayette, Pennsylvania. See birth years of children. If first wife died, a pioneer father with young children would need to remarry quickly for the sake of his young children.
