William Judson "Bill" Van Every

William "Bill" Judson Van Every passed away peacefully at his home in Murrieta Friday April 2. Bill was born 11 November 1925 to Burt James and Pearl (Witherspoon) Van Every in Salem, Oregon. He grew up on farms near Rupert in MInidoka County, Idaho.

Bill retired in 1987 as teacher and counselor at King City High School, Monterey County, California. He previously worked in schools in Caldwell, Idaho, and Ogden, Utah. He and his wife have resided in The Colony in Murrieta since 1995.

Bill was the last of six Van Every brothers. All except one served in a branch of the U.S. Military. His brother Norvel was killed by a kamikaze attack on the U.S. Intrepid in WWII. Bill served as Signalman 1/C on an attack transport, the USS Hansford, during WWII.

The Hansford transported 5.000 marines for the initial attack on Iwo Jima. During the battle, Bill's most memorable event was watching from the ships telescope as the US flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi. The Hansford also transported troops to the battle for Okinawa. It was in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the peace treaty on the USS Missouri and served there as port patrol for several weeks afterwards.

Survivors are his wife of 73 years, Anna Mae (McCall), his son Nolan D. Van Every, and Nolan's wife Kara Lu. three daughters; Cheryl Tandberg, Alane Rivera and Nancy Rossignol; grandchildren, Sky Tandberg, Erika (Tandberg) Potter, Forrest Tandberg, Lydia Vernon, Talitha Maddalena, Nathanael Hood, Kayla Van Every and Trisha (Van Every) Jackson; and eleven great grandchildren.
