School Pioneer Dies


Bernice E. Fritsch, instrumental in starting Spokane's first public kindergarten, died last night at a local hospital.


A Spokane resident 56 years, she was graduated from Wilson Elementary School and North Central High School. As an active PTA member, she was instrumental in establishing the first public kindergarten in Spokane in 1939 at Audubon School.


She was a member of Manito United Presbyterian Church, the Current Events Club, the Merit Park Garden Club, and a former member of the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary.


Survivors include her husband, Milton O. Fritsch, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Robert Johnson of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Mrs. Robert Hagseth, Mrs. Donald Miller and Mrs. Jimmy Brown, all of Spokane; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Cora Honey, Spokane; and two brothers, Kenneth Henager of Mesa, Ariz., and Charles Henager of Spokane.


There will be private graveside services Monday at 10:30 a.m. Riverside Mausoleum with burial in Greenwood Memorial Terrace.


A memorial service will be held at Manito United Presbyterian Church Monday at 2 p.m.


Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


The family suggests memorial gifts be given to the Manito United Presbyterian Church, E402 29th Ave., Spokane, WA 99203.
