Jose Claudio Alvitre y Hernandez was born on 7 April 1811 at Rancho Santa Gertrudis, Alta California to Felipe Sebastian Hernandez and Maria Rufina Hernandez. He was baptized on the same day at Mission San Gabriel. He married Maria de la Ascencion Valenzuela about 1830 in Alta California. On 28 April 1861 at Old Mission (now Montebello), California he murdered his wife by stabbing her seven times. He attempted to escape, but the crime was soon discovered and he was pursued and captured. The posse decided that there was no need for a trial and he was summarily lynched. He was buried on 29 April 1861 at Mission San Gabriel Cemetery.
