1769 Portolá Expedition


Felipe Sebastián Alvitre was born at Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa, Nueva España, about 1750. He enlisted as a soldado de cuera and accompanied Colonel Portolá to Alta California in 1769-70. He appears on the San Diego Presidio roster dated October 10, 1770 (Mason, Bill. "The Garrisons of San Diego Presidio: 1770-1794"; The Journal of San Diego History; San Diego Historical Society Quarterly, Fall 1978, Vol. 24, No. 4). He married María Rufina Hernández (1750-1820?). He died at his residence on Rancho de los Nietos and was buried in the San Gabriel Mission Cemetery February 22, 1817 (SG Death 03841, ECPP).
