Richard Henry Crew was the son of Daniel Crew and Mary Jane Taylor. His date of birth is based on Census records dating back to 1861, which result in a birth year of 1844. His age at death on the monument and in his obituary is apparently incorrect.

Daniel and Mary Jane Crew and their family moved to Ontario, where Richard married Margaret Potts on 23 June 1866 in Toronto, York County. Margaret died in 1887.

On 20 May 1890, Richard married Charlotte Beatty (née Lennox) at Hamilton, in Wentworth County, Ontario. They had no children together.

Richard was the innkeeper of Ontario House, a large hotel on Kingston Road in Toronto, where the family also resided. He died there on 3 February 1915. His obituary was published in the Toronto Daily Star on 4 February 1915, p. 17, col. 7.

NOTE: George Crew, born in 1875, son of Richard Henry Crew, Sr. and his first wife Margaret Potts, can be confused with George Henry Beatty, Jr., born in 1874, son of Charlotte Lennox and George Henry Beatty, Sr.
Charlotte's son George Henry Beatty, Jr. lived with Charlotte and her second husband Richard Crew after their marriage and was incorrectly named George Crew on the 1901 Canada Census.
