Mr. Rufus was a long time resident of Lafayette. He didn't hesitate to serve his country in the Korean War (1952-1954), He was honorably discharged from the Army in August 1960. He was a member of the American Legion of Branch, La and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars- Post 3106 of Leesville, LA.
Mr. Bourgeois went to work for Schlumberger Well Service in 1956 as a diesel mechanic for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed being with family and friends, especially with his great-grandchildren. Rufus enjoyed spending lots of his retirement at his camp in Zwollie, La, setting out catfish lines.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-eight years and excellent caretaker, Lucy M. Bourgeois; one son, Michael Borque, Sr. and wife, Dixie of China TX; three daughters, Debra and husband, Larry Benoit of Erath, Dianne and husband, Wayne LeBlanc of New Iberia, Gale M. Bourgeois of New Iberia; two step-sons, Gene R. Grossie of Commerce City, CO, Vance "Tony" and wife, Carole Grossie of Penn Valley, CA; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one brother, Jim and wife, Violet Bourgeois of Baton Rouge; three sisters, Gloria and husband, Joseph Bodi of Greenwells Springs, Lucille and husband, Bert Matt of Lawtell and Mary Helen Difraia of Marepas; one sister-in-law, Clara Bourgeois of Pineville; fourteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bourgeois was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Avie Thibodeaux Bourgeois; two brothers, Ray and Armand Bourgeois; two sisters, Rosie B. Lalonde and Wilma B. Richard.
