Adah-Marie Jefferis
July 30, 1928 - April 13, 2021

Adah-Marie was born in Abercrombie, North Dakota. Her family moved to Williston, North Dakota when she was a freshman in high school. She is a graduate of St. Olaf College, her father's alma mater. Adah-Marie was the seventh of eight children of Norwegian immigrants Andrew and Gena Sathe.

Adah-Marie moved to the Washington, DC suburbs of Virginia immediately after college in 1950. Intending to work in Foreign Service, she was disappointed to discover the required test would not be offered again for another year, so she set out to find a job.

She met the love of her life, Cliff Jefferis when they were both working at GEICO in DC where she was proud to be the company's first female Assistant Sales Manager. Cliff often said that he fell in love with her at first sight. They lived in Virginia until 1970 when the family moved to Frankfurt, Germany for a year and then to San Antonio when Cliff was an executive with USAA. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002, and Cliff passed away that December.

Adah-Marie was a very active participant in San Antonio city life. She was a board member of the San Antonio Symphony for many years and she and Cliff attended countless Symphony performances. Her season tickets were faithfully renewed for all 50 years in San Antonio. She served as a Council Management Consultant for the National Volunteer Staff of Camp Fire Girls, Inc. in the early 70s; served on the boards of St Luke's Lutheran Health Ministries, St Luke's Baptist Hospital, the San Antonio Council of Churches, the Battered Women's Shelter of Bexar County, and Christian Assistance Ministries where she also volunteered for ten years as an interviewer – the person who assesses the needs of the clients, serves, and assists them in getting the help the ministry could provide. She received a local prestigious Jefferson Award for Public Service in 1979.

Adah-Marie and Cliff were active members of Christ Lutheran Church from the time they moved to San Antonio and enjoyed singing in the choir together for many years. Her last church service was the livestream Easter service just a few weeks ago.

Adah-Marie was multilingual. In addition to English, she spoke Norwegian, German, and French. She and Cliff would speak French at home when they didn't want their children to know what they were saying. She was a master at the New York Times crossword, famously doing all of them in ink. She read constantly and one of her children's joys was the fact that she would read any book they recommended. Her sparkling intelligence permeated every aspect of her life.

Adah-Marie is survived by her children Leslie Jefferis and husband Richard Bardon; Bruce Jefferis and wife Marina; LeeAnn Coburn and husband Russ; and her Argentine son via the Foreign Exchange student program, Rolo Catanzaro and his wife Laura who visited many times over the past 40 years. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Leslie's children Andrew Norman and his wife Ashley; James Norman and his wife Sharon; and Anne Marie Wakefield and her husband Dave. Bruce's children: Phillip Jefferis and his wife Niki; Allison Butcher and her husband Chris; and Paul Jefferis and his wife Lenel. LeeAnn's children: Michele Arrieta and her wife Aisling; Benjamin Collins and his wife Elizabeth; and her step-children Devan Coburn and his wife Katya and Charlotte Coburn. She is survived by 14 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include many nieces and nephews who all knew her as Aunt Honen, along with many dear friends who wrote, called and visited often throughout the years.

Adah-Marie was preceded in death by her husband Cliff, her parents and all of her siblings. She was beloved by all of her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren who celebrated her 90th birthday together in July 2018. She is greatly missed, and her memory will always be cherished.

There will be a private family memorial service, and her ashes will be interred with her husband Cliff in the columbarium at Christ Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Food Bank, or any charitable organization of your choice. Adah-Marie appreciated acts of kindness and generosity of any form to those in need.
