Father Gordon Keith
Mother Margaret Ann " Peggy" Sullivan

JOHNSTON, Iowa – Mary Joan Keith, 52, of Johnston, Iowa, entered eternal peace Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at her home, after a long battle with ALS. She was born Aug. 26, 1957, in Elwood City, Pa., to Margaret Ann Sullivan and Gordon "Tony" W. Keith. She graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School in Illinois in 1975 and earned a degree in history from Northern Illinois University. She lived her life in Baden, Pa., Brookfield, Richmond, Sharon, Wis., and Johnston, Iowa. She was employed by the McHenry County Conservation District as the volunteer coordinator for many years. Her duties included the annual Trail of History at Glacial Park in Richmond. Her passions were Civil War re-enacting in both the Second Virginia Valley Corps and 55th Illinois Regiments, performing as a living history participant and docent, drumming, cooking her legendary stuffing balls, and genealogy. She enjoyed the company of her beloved cats, Birdy and Wose. She is survived and will be missed by her mother, Peggy; her sister, Katie Moller (Michael); her brothers, John (Mary Ellen), Dan, Chris (Patty), Tony and Bob; and her stepmother, Anne-Lise Keith. She also was the very much-loved and adored aunt of John Keith Jr., Jessica and Hannah Keith, Mallory and Mary Kate Moller, Gabriel, Margaret, Peter, Samuel, Christopher, William and Joseph Keith and Elijah Keith. She leaves behind many friends, and she brought all of us a richer sense of joy, humility, and laughter. She finally has reached a place of peace and painlessness and will be in our hearts forever. She was preceded in death by her father, Gordon. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale, Iowa. A service also will take place in northern Illinois in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, send donations to the St. Joseph Emergency Family Shelter in Des Moines, Iowa.
