LEWISTOWN - John W. Schmidt, 85, of 10 Schmidt Lane, Lewistown, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare William Penn. Born Sept. 22, 1917, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Charles) Schmidt. His wife, Hazel E. (Hoffman) Schmidt, whom he married March 5, 1939, survives. Also surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Nancy)Shilling, 10 Shilling Lane, Lewistown, and Mrs. Brian (Terry) Stangl, 20 Wimp Bar Drive, Lewistown; a sister, Alma Shilling, Shinglehouse; five grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Early in life he worked at American Viscose Corporation. He also owned and operated Schmidt's Trailer Court and Car Wash. He was currently serving his 3rd term as Granville Township Supervisor. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge #143, Lewistown; Life member of B.P.O.E. #663, Lewistown; Brooklyn Hose Company, American Legion Post 90, PA State Association Twp. Supervisors, U.C.T. Council #591, member of C.C.C., VFW Post 7011; He was a former Golden Glove Champion Boxer and Mifflin County Boxing Commissioner. His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown with Rev. Kenneth W. Longfield officiating. Interment will be Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.
