Powell was born in the sawmill town of Remlig which in 1907 was located on the line of Jasper Co. and Shelby Co.
He was known as the traveling railroad man. He retired from Southern Pacific Railroad after 45 years of service.
He could keep a person spell bound with highlights of a job that began in 1928 and kept him busy until retirement in 1973. Not only were the railroad years interesting but his recall of minute details, dates and co-workers' names, leave nothing to the listener's imagination.
