Son of Rev. Ambrose Smith (1820-1862) and Cynthia Maria (Egerton) Smith (1821-1899). He was a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger Gov. William Bradford.

Husband of Eliza Ann Currier (1851-1930), married May 13, 1873 in Norwich, VT.
Father of:
1. Arthur Whitmore Smith (1874-1954),
2. Ellen Lois Smith (1876-1877),
3. Dr. Houghton Currier Smith (1877-1954),
4. Honora Elizabeth Smith (1880-1906),
5. James Francis Smith (1881-1937),
6. Eva Margaret Smith (1884-1930),
7. Anne Eliza Smith (1892-1981).

According to "The History of Boscawen and Webster, from 1733 to 1878" compiled by Charles Carleton Coffin, in 1878 he was a farmer living in Hartford, Vermont.

There was an obituary published in the Caledonain Record, Saint Johnsbury, VT on 04 Apr 1925 and another in the Vermont Union Journal in Lyndonville, VT on 08 Apr 1925, page 5.

Update 3/31/2021: I have checked with the town clerks in Norwich and Hartford (for White River Junction) and neither can find any record of them in the town records. Someone found him named on the stone in the Hillside cemetery in Norwich, VT with wife and 2 daughters.
