George was taken as a prisoner of war. Hundreds of American POWs were being transported in an unmarked Japanese freighter. Off the East China Coast, the freighter sank after being attacked by a U.S. submarine. Of the hundreds of Americans on board, only three survived.
George was a 1939 graduate from Corpus Christi High School and was survived by his mother, four brothers, and three sisters.
