Wooster Daily Record - 19, February 1945: James Elmer Totten was born in Columbiana County, April 27, 1857, the son of George and Elizabeth Totten, and passed away Wednesday Feb. 7, 1945, at the home of his son Claude in Plain Township, at the age of 87 years, nine months and 11 days. He was the last of his family.
On Sept. 19, 1883, he was united in marriage with Clara Luella Egbert. To this union there were born three sons and four daughters.
He was converted about 40 years ago in the Canaan Methodist Church and he and his wife both became members of this church. His wife, Clara, two sons and one daughter have preceded him in departing this life. Left to cherish the memory of his life are two sons, Claude and Guy, and three daughters, Goldie Russell, Anna Hawk and Alice Younker, twenty grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and many friends.
He was laid to rest in the Canaan Cemetery, on Saturday, Feb 10, the service was in charge of Rev . V. E. Hartzell. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."

CRESTON - Feb 8, James Elmer Totten, 88, passed away last night at the home of his son, Claude, in Shreve. He was for many years a farmer in Canaan Township.
Surviving are two sons, Claude, and Guy of Congress Township; three daughter's, Anna Hawk of Dalton, Alice Younker and Goldie Russell of Canaan; 20 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. His wife and two sons preceded him in death.
The body is at the Murray Funeral Home where friends may call until Saturday noon, when it will be taken to the Canaan Methodist Church. Services will be conducted there at 2 p.m. by Rev. Willard Hartzel of Wooster and burial will be made in the Canaan cemetery.
