Born on 18 May 1903 in Meridian, MS., he was the son of the late Minnie Lee White and Benjamin Augustus Short. He graduated from the Naval Academy with the Class of 1924 and subsequently received his master's degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During his Navy career, he was known as "Dyna," a nickname earned from setting off a string of firecrackers while in high school during study hall.
His first duty station was aboard TEXAS in the gunnery department. Twenty-four years after graduation, TEXAS supported the landing on Okinawa where Commodore Short was ashore serving as commander of a brigade of Seabees (some 15,000 men). Previously, he was commander of the Fourth Naval Construction Brigade on Manus in the Admiralty Islands. He was awarded two Legion of Merit decorations with Combat V in addition to numerous other awards. After his promotion to admiral, he served as director of construction in Spain, and his final duty station was command of all Seabees activity in the Pacific. He retired from the Navy in 1959.
Wallace was an avid goffer and at one point had a 2 handicap. He w-as still playing golf and driving himself to the golf course at the age of 102. His spirit and humorous Christmas letters are well remembered by all. Wallace was a highly respected and admired person who was loved by all he came in contact with both socially and professionally. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather and we will miss your love your wit and your wisdom so very much, but we know you are at peace with God.
