George Sampson Karns was born in Bedford County Virginia on Dec. 23, 1821 to Michael and Mary (Bales) Karns. He was the ninth of 11 children. When he was 16 years old in 1837, his family moved to the recently opened Platte Purchase area of what later became NW Missouri, and settled in Washington Township in Buchanan County, east of St. Joseph. George Sampson assisted his family in developing their homeplace and was said to have possessed willing hands and much determination to succeed. Eventually he homesteaded and purchased over 1,000 acres of farm land in the area. In 1852 he married Matilda Watson from Grand River where her father was a prominent physician. Together they reared a family of nine children. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. George Sampson Karns passed away on March 12, 1904.

Gravesite Details

George Sampson Karns is buried along side wife, Matilda, in approximately in the center of the Karns cemetery. It is accessible through fields and is best visited in winter or early spring due to its overgrown condition.
