Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company D, 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on October 31, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on February 1, 1864 and to 1st Sergeant on June 1, 1864, he was wounded twice during his service (June 3, 1863 at the Battle of Cold Harbor and August 25, 1864 at the Battle of Ream's Station). He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant on June 16, 1865, but was never mustered in at that rank, and was honorably discharged as a 1st Sergeant on July 1, 1865.
