Retha Bell Mitchell Caddell was born to a pioneer family, Lige and Fannie Lee Russell Mitchell, on May 12, 1912, in Carlsbad. She was raised in and attended school in Carlsbad.
Retha married Lester "Lucky" Caddell at a young age and had seven sons and one daughter. She drove a school bus, was a secretary for a plaster and cement union and, for 40 years, kept the nursery at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
At age 63, she raised four more children - grandchildren Kenny, Scotty, Tommy and Tonya Caddell. Her home was known as the "pancake pit stop" on the way to school. Retha touched the lives of many people. She never found a stranger and was a mother to many kids.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five sons, five brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by two sons, Terry Gene Caddell and wife Sunnie of Quemado, and Vernon Caddell and wife Jan of Carlsbad; one daughter, Doris D. Kirk and husband Steve of Carlsbad; one sister, Lillie Florance and husband Willie Wilcox of McCook, Neb.; and 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Craig Kirk, Kenny Caddell, Scott Caddell, Ross Wilson, Deana Cavender and Terry Lynn Caddell.
Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
