John M. Mathis was born 1852 in Walker Co., GA, the son of William Ignatius Mathis and Martha Whitlow. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mathis and Mary "Polly" Barker of Walton Co., GA. Polly was the dau. of Killis Barker. His maternal grandparents were Bolden Whitlow and Mary Elizabeth Stewart. The Whitlows and Stewarts were from Halifax Co., VA. Bolden was the son of Nicholas Whitlow.
John Mathis' mother, Martha Whitlow Mathis, died in 1874 and is buried at The Cove Cemetery, in Walker Co., GA. Shortly after her death, he emigrated to Texas with his father and several siblings. His father died in Kosse, TX at the home of his son, James Bonds Mathis.
