Gayle Thomas Carnes of Howe, formerly of Denton, died Monday, March 1, 2021 from complications of COVID-19. He was born on March 12, 1934 in Wetumka, Oklahoma to Violet and Tom Carnes. His earliest years were spent in Oklahoma, Saint Jo, and then Gainesville. He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1951, excelling in track, basketball, and football. The combination of his running speed and his slow “at ease” pace generally earned him the nickname “Lightning” while he was in high school. All who knew him appreciated his gentle manner.

Gayle graduated from North Texas State College in Denton (now the University of North Texas) in 1955. He served in the US Army following his graduation. He spent most of his professional life working for Moore Business Forms in Denton, first in its plant and subsequently in the Southern Division headquarters offices.

Gayle is survived by his treasured wife, Elsie Carnes, who provided him with much joy and additional family members later in his life, especially through Elsie’s daughter Jerri Sparks, her husband Jeff, and grandchildren Kaitlyn and Joshua, all of Melissa, Texas. He is also survived by his sons from his prior marriage, Thomas Carnes of Fredericksburg, Texas and John Carnes of Lewisville, Texas, and their respective spouses, as well as a granddaughter, Emma Carnes, of Frisco, Texas. He was predeceased in 2020 by his daughter, Christy Lynn Carnes of Lakeway, Texas.

Due to the continued presence of COIVID-19, there will be no memorial service. Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 13, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Waldo Funeral Home, 619 N. Travis Street, Sherman, Texas, to be followed by a private internment service March 14, 2021 at Wetumka, Cemetery, Wetumka, Oklahoma. The family respectfully requests that all attendees exercise social distancing and wear face protection, and we will provide masks for those who do not have them. Gayle’s death is a testament to the fact that, while the end of this pandemic is in sight, the COVID virus remains a very real and serious threat.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, who performed extraordinarily during Gayle’s illness, and provided much comfort, guidance, and kindness throughout. They are our heroes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the charitable organization of your choice, particularly those charities providing relief to those most impacted by the pandemic.
