David came to Fountain County, Indiana and started out being a hotel keeper. Many of the first businessmen of Covington stayed at the "Hotel de Rawles". He, also, served as one of the first Justice of the Peace for the area.
He was appointed Postmaster of Covington, Indiana on February 11, 1837. He held this position until May of 1849.
He was a charter member of the Covington Lodge, No 31, I.O.O.F which was founded in April of 1845. He was elected the first N.G. of the organization.
He was still residing in Covington in Fountain County with his wife, Margaret, in 1870 according to the census.
