22 Feb 1865 - 28 Sep 1865∼The death angel laid a heavy hand upon this community during the past week and three have answered the summons to meet their Maker for the final judgment.
John W. Provance died at this home in Union Valley last Thursday evening at 10:20 o'clock. The funeral was held Saturday at the home and was attended by a large company of neighbors and friends.
John W. Provance was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Sept 19, 1823 and was eighty-eight years, two months and four days old at the time of his death. He became a member of the Dunkard Church in 1845 and continued a consistent member of that church until his death, having been a minister of the Gospel for over thirty years.
In 1843 he was united in marriage to Lucretia Arnett. Of this union eleven children were born, five girls and six boys, nine of whom are living. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and received an honorable discharge at its close. Having lost his wife by death, he was united in marriage to Mary Sophronia Bolyard in 1890. Nine children were born to this union, four sons and five daughters of which seven are living.
He moved to the West in 1890 and was one of the earliest pioneers of the Chelan country and has resided here ever since.
The funeral services, by his request, were conducted from the family residence in Union Valley by his friend and former comrade in arms, D.F. Wilsey; and the funeral was attended by ten of his children among whom were three grown sons, Philip Provance, of West Virginia; James Provance, of Oregon and A.S. Provance of Union Valley.
A kind husband and father and good citizen has passed to the last roll call.
