Our Mom and Grandma, Ludean Archibald Campbell, born May 21, 1925, to LeRoy Archibald and Susan Alder in Dayton Idaho, lived an incredible life: She once said that, during her lifetime, the world went from outhouses to outer space. She lived a life of love and service to her Savior, her family, and all around her.
Mom grew up on a farm during the depression and learned at an early age to work hard, which fortunately helped prepare for the daunting task of raising five children, some of whom (no names) were quite difficult.
In a time when college degrees were rare, especially for women, mom graduated from Utah State University as did her parents, siblings, husband, and many of her children and grandchildren. Her photographic memory allowed her to remember not just what she read in her textbooks, but also where it was located on the page.
Mom’s most challenging callings, besides that of being a mother, included teaching gospel doctrine classes and being Stake Relief Society President. She much preferred serving quietly in the background, rather than being in the forefront. She served four full-time missions, first in Mexico as a young missionary, and later with Dad as a senior missionary, in Mexico again, then Tonga, and finally Nauvoo. Her first mission, as a young woman, was due to Dad, and his was due her. when Dad was first called on a mission, he was reluctant to go because he had just returned from the war and wanted to marry Mom. So the church called Mom on a mission, to eliminate that obstacle, and she never turned down a calling. They married after they both completed their missions, on March 24, 1949 in the Logan temple.
Our family is a traditional one – Dad is the head of the family and Mom is the heart. Mother Theresa often said: “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” Mom, grandma, we are all so grateful for the million small things you’ve done for each of us, always with great love.
Besides that great love, Mom has tremendous energy, strength, courage, intellect, and talent. She did everything well, including typing, and playing the piano, despite the loss of three fingers at a young age. No one ever thought of her a being disabled, because she wasn’t. She also has a touch of stubbornness, which fortunately didn’t pass on to her kids. No one ever won a contest with her over who pays the bill.
We know that all she has accomplished in this life is just the beginning. She and Dad were finally, joyfully reunited on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2021, and she has forgiven him for leaving first. They are now continuing their great work together. Each has great abilities and together, as a team, they are amazing!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Dewey Campbell MD, parents, and siblings, whose loving company she is now enjoying. She is survived by an impressive posterity who love her dearly!
