aged 61 yearsSon of Hannah Dickerman and William Bassett of New Haven.

Captain John Bassett married Mercy Todd, daughter of Grace Middlebrook and Christopher Todd of Yorkshire, England, who immigrated to the Boston vicinity prior to settling at New Haven.

Known children: Mercy Bassett 1654-1756, md. Gov. Benjamin Miller; Hannah Bassett 1679-1766, md. Ebenezer Mansfield; Sarah Bassett 1682-1771, md. Capt. Daniel Bradley on 16 January 1702; Lydia Bassett 1685-1739, md. Stephen Munson; Abigail Bassett 1688-1743, md. Phinehas Clark; John Bassett Jr., 1691-1757, md. Elizabeth Thompson; Joseph Bassett 1694-died young; Rebeckah Bassett 1693-1732, md. William Whitmore on 18 April 1714; and Joseph Bassett 1697-1761, md. Hannah unknown.

NOTE: This memorial is created for the final resting place of Captain John Bassett/Bassat - his gravestone was moved to Grove Street Cemetery, but by the year 1821, he had been buried for almost 110 years - there is no evidence his remains were moved to Grove Street.

Reverse links are made from this memorial to his gravestone memorial, Capt John Bassat to avoid double links to children. (His daughter, Rebeckah Bassett Whitmore is my direct ancestor).

The Green was used as the main burial grounds for the residents of New Haven during its first 150 years, but by 1821 the practice was abolished and many of the headstones were moved to the Grove Street Cemetery. However, the remains of the dead were not moved, and thus still remain below the soil of the Green. It is estimated that between 5,000 and 10,000 people remain buried there, including Benedict Arnold's first wife, members of President Rutherford B. Hayes' family, Reverend James Pierpont (founder of Yale University), and Theophilus Eaton, one of the founders of New Haven and the church and governor of the New Haven Colony for 19 years.
