Rev. Amos Terrell

A well-spent life, one that touched others with service and love came to an end with the demise of Reverend Amos Terrell on Thursday, June 8, 2006. One of God's torches, a flaming evangel in the world, has been extinguished, and yet the reflected brilliance of that torch will light the path for many years to come.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Morning Star Baptist Church, 5340 Jewella Ave.

Reverend Amos Terrell was born in Benton, AR; to Acie and Lucinda Nichols Terrell on 22 August 1923. He was the eldest of twelve children.

The family moved to Memphis Tennessee in 1924 and the city claimed him as a native son.

Reverend Terrell was married to the late Alma Thornton and to this union nine children were born.

He was a veteran of World War II and saw action in the Pacific while serving in the United States Navy. After returning from active duty he accepted Christ. The late Reverend O. C Collins, Sr., pastor of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, TN; baptized him. He was placed with the Mission Ministry where he grew mentally, physically, and spiritually. He accepted the call to ministry in 1952 and in 1953 was called to pastor the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Memphis, TN.

After the passing of Dr. A. S. Jackson, Jr. in 1959, Reverend Terrell accepted the call to pastor Lakeside Baptist Church on November 1, 1959. He was installed as pastor on 17 January 1960. In August of 1969, he negotiated and secured a loan in excess of one million dollars for the structure of Lakeside Gardens Incorporated.

He was united in matrimony to Dorothy Calhoun. She worked tirelessly by his side for 28 years until her death in 2002.
