Margaret (Allen) Stockwell was born 11 December 1838 and died 21 May 1870. She is buried in Clearspring Cemetery, Clear Spring, Jackson Co., Indiana. Her parents were William Allen and Axiom "Axey" Tatlock. Axiom was the sister of Sarah Tatlock, making Margaret the niece of Daniel and Sarah (Tatlock) Dawalt. Margaret's father, William Allen, died on 6 June 1863 and is also buried in the Clearspring Cemetery. Axey remarried Unknown Goen and is buried in Clearspring Cemetery next to her first husband, William Allen.
Margaret Allen married David A. Stockwell. David enlisted in the 67th Regiment, Company K, Indiana Infantry on 20 August 1862 and was discharged on 19 July 1865. In the 1870 Census, David is shown with three young girls that are most likely Margaret's daughters. David and his second wife are buried in Clearspring Cemetery. It talks about the death of her father, the loss of a small child a few months earlier and mentions her husband who is away fighting for the Union in the Civil War. My Dear uncl and aunt i take my seat in order to in form you that we are tolerable well considering orr loss trusting god may bless you all with good health we lost our Dearest father on earth he took sick on the fourth of june with the colic then took a sinking chil and it took him a way he was taking sick on the fourth about 3 oclock in the morning and died the next night about 3 oclock it was a great loos to us we had his funerel preached at the babtist church he was beried at Clearspring i can tel you this is a trublesom world to us i think i have more than i can bare with some times i live a very lonesome life on the account of my friends and family being separated from me my darling babe died the 19 of April then my father i got a leter from stock will he had bin fiting ten days and fel on the battle field and sprained his hip he is at Vicksburg in the 67 reg Co K
We don't get much wer news now but we hear our side is badly whipt in virgina you rote a bout the death of martin we was very sory to hear sutch news but glad to hear that he left a great satisfaction with his friends you mis him but you don't mis him like we mis our father from his family we are very lonesome we would bevery glad if you and some of you could come over and see us and give us advise we never had such a trile to bare with before we don't no hardly what to do Mother is going to town to fix bisnes saturdy week it is mothers re quest that i must rite and rember you of our loss for we feel the loss in your family this in remberence to all our relation i have to rite to Mr stockwill so i will bring my letter to a close so no more rite soon come over rember us til Death
