May 1935 - Carroll Times - Miss Nellie Luella Atkinson, 66 years old, who came to Carroll about 57 years ago, passed away yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock at St. Anthony hospital of a lingering illness. Miss Atkinson first became seriously ill about two years ago and since then had been in the hospital at various times taking treatment. She seemed to be gradually gaining in strength and was being cared for at her home at 827 North Court street by her sister, Miss Katie, until about two weeks ago when she suddenly became worse and was removed once more to the hospital. She grew slowly weaker the last few days and was near death several times. The body is at the Huffman Funeral Home. Services will be held at the Huffman Funeral home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Claude R. Cook of the Methodist church will be in charge of the services. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
Born in Indiana Nellie Atkinson was born at Lafayette, Ind, on July, 31, 1868, the daughter of John and Louise (Garland) Atkinson. She accompanied her parents to Carroll on April 10, 1878, where Mr Atkinson engaged in the hardware business. The family lived in the house just one block south of their present house. Later they bought the house at 827 N Court and built a new home where they have since lived.
Miss Atkinson attended the pubic schools and was a Carroll high school graduate. Miss Atkinson finished the normal training course at Cedar Falls after her high school work and began teaching immediately, teaching altogether more than 25 years. She taught for some time in the Dedham school and later taught in the south side Carroll public school. She taught in Minnesota for two years going from there to Lewistown, Mont., where she remained until retiring from the teaching profession in 1919 to return to Carroll to make her home.
Both her parents passed away while she was stationed at Lewistown, her mother died on Nov. 11, 1913 and her father passed away on Sept. 11, 1914. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Joyce Gates of Lewistown, Mont., who had just recently made an extended visit with her sister, and Miss Katie at home. Two brothers also survive their sister, John, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Will at home. A sister, Florence, died on February 14, 1929. The last few years, Miss Atkinson has spent most of her spare time in doing hemstitching, of which work she was well accomplished.
