Zaidee Bell Baker was born on 18 September 1873 in Gonzales, Texas, to farmer James Alexander Baker and his wife, Laura Lee Squires. Zaidee married Joseph Perry Ford on 8 January 1891, when she was seventeen years old, at the Baker home in Gonzales, Texas. Their children were Eva, Eunice, Laura, Victor, and Elmer Ford. Joseph gave Zaidee a Colt 45 shortly after they were married and taught her how to shoot it; he wanted her to be safe when he was away. Zaidee Baker Ford slept with her Colt 45 under her pillow until she died, August of 1976, in Lindale, Texas, at the age of almost 103. When asked what she was so afraid of, she replied, "not a damn thing." She was buried with her husband and daughter at Bethesda Cemetery in Smith County.
