John Harrison Austin was born in South Carolina. His parents were Anderson and Martha Dacus Austin. He moved with his parents to MS around 1840. John's mother Martha died around 1854. Where she is buried is unknown. John married Temperance Rucker and they lived in Montgomery County. Their sons were Bowen, Luther Barksdale, Anderson, Avery, and Herman. Their daughters were Bennie, Bertha, Jennie, Dacus "Dake", and Clyde.

J. H. Austin died December 30th at his home near Vaiden. He was 78 years old, an ex-Confederate Soldier, a Mason, and was one of the most prominent and best known citizens of this Section. He was a son of the late Esquire Anderson Austin. He was buried with Masonic honors at Wesley Chapel. He leaves a large family of children who are all married and have families of their own, to whom we extend sympathy in the loss of their father and grandfather.

The story of John Harrison Austin as a Confederate soldier has been handed down through the generations. He was in the Battle of Vicksburg and an urgent message needed to be delivered. John swam the Mississippi River at night to deliver the message. It is unknown what the message said or who it was for.
