HARVEY'S OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran

Harvey Howard Cooper passed away at the age of 90 on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at his home. He was born on February 5, 1930, in the area known as Grassy Lick, just outside of Morehead, Kentucky. He was the second child of four and only son born to Wilbert Cooper and Bessie Morehouse Cooper.

Harvey’s early years were spent during The Great Depression, and like many others, his formal education ended after the eighth grade, at which time he went to work helping on the family farm. In his late teen years, he became restless with subsistence farm life and longed for more life opportunities. He met a girl, Loretta Baldridge from Clearfield, Kentucky, and they fell in love. However, The Korean War intervened. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served a combat tour in Korea as part of a mortar crew. Upon his return, he married Loretta in December 1953 and migrated north to Muncie, Indiana. They lived in Muncie most of their lives and raised 3 children, Larry, Jerry, and Connie.

Harvey was a master at fixing machines and became a skilled tradesman at Delco. He was a life-long General Motors employee. He just had a gift for understanding how things worked and how to fix them.

As a boy, Harvey developed a love of baseball, even if he had to use a rolled-up sock covered in twine and tape as a ball. He passed on that love to his sons. As they would say, “We can’t count the number of times he played catch with us and suffered errant throws bouncing off his knees and shins, but never complained.” Harvey was a life-long Cincinnati Reds fan. He was also an expert fisherman and passed the love, but not necessarily the talent, for fishing to his children and subsequently to his grandchildren.

Harvey enjoyed many hobbies through the years. He loved to golf, play cards with friends and family, was an excellent woods craftsman, and took meticulous care of their home's yard. He also loved watching and supporting his children and grandchildren’s extracurricular activities. He was their biggest cheerleader on the sidelines. He also loved going to Leesburg, Florida and spending his retirement years with friends and family.

Words can’t express the respect, admiration, and love for this quiet, gentle man. Harvey was strong, incredibly strong, but seldom said a cross word. The last few years of his life were hard, as he helped and supported Loretta in her battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. He visited the love of his life twice a day, every day, until a pandemic interfered. After 67 years of marriage, Loretta passed on December 17, 2020. Harvey always said he would be right behind her when it was time to go to Heaven. He was good for his word.

Harvey is survived by sons, Larry D. Cooper (Kathy) of Charlotte, North Carolina and Jerry L. Cooper (Elizabeth) of Littleton, Colorado; daughter, Connie Mochal (James) of Muncie; brothers-in-law, Earnie Baldridge (Jan) of Oklahoma and Virgil Baldridge (Darlene) of Wabash, Indiana; sisters-in-law, Delores Jones (Waverly) of Lexington, Kentucky and Shirley Morgan (Ed) of Florida; nine grandchildren, Elijah, Stephanie, and Tyler Cooper, Justin and Derek Cooper, Crystal Bazile, Jasmine Brandenburger, and Ryan and Brooke Mochal; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Sudia, Lydia, and Virginia Cooper, all from Morehead, Kentucky.

The family would like to thank everyone for their expressions of condolences and sympathy. The tributes and remembrances have been heartwarming. Although the last four weeks of Harvey’s life were challenging, we would like to give a special thanks to Donna Fierce, Deborah Phipps, Cristy Luzadder, Laura Myers, Mary Boyd, Julie Archey, and Jasmine Garrison.

“You only went to the eighth grade, but you were the smartest man I knew. I was proud to call you my dad. I’m going to miss you every day. Go rest high on that mountain.” Love, Larry
