I have written a biography (below) for John Berry that I would like to have added to his memorial please. I cite a reference. The book was not copyrighted because it was written so all the family would have the information
about our ancestors.

John Berry is memorial #22188418.

If you would like to transfer John to me, I would gladly accept. I am a direct
descendant.

Thank you,

The following biography is based on information from The Descendants of Joseph and Sarah (Shaffer) Berry and James and Sarah (Crume) Hasty, compiled and edited by Carolle Stratton Berry, published November 1993, by BYU Print Services, Brigham Young University.

John was the third child of Joseph and Sarah (Shaffer) Berry. Although he was born near Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, while still an infant in 1820 his father and family moved across the state line to Jackson Twp, Preble County, Ohio. As soon as he grew up with his pioneer family and was old enough to labor, he was working hard to clear the land and plant the crops and help his
father and the other boys make their farm produce and contribute to the family's support.

John was married to Sarah Ann Hasty and although the record has not been found, the marriage had to be around 1842 somewhere near Preble County, Ohio. John and
Sarah were still in Preble County for the 1850 census.

This is where the first five children were born:
Mary Emily Berry (1843-1885),
Joseph Allen Berry (1845-1918),
Daniel Crume Berry (1846-1929),
Catherine Salina Berry (1848-1928),
and John Nelson Berry (1852-1945).

Then by the 1860 census the family was in Aboite Twp, Allen County, Indiana with two additional children. James Natalus Franklin Berry (1855-1949) was born in Whitley County and we think Sarah R. Berry died as a child (1858-ca 1869). All
seven children were living at home in the 1860 census.

John served and was injured in the Civil War. When he came home there was a need to support his family. In order to do this John gathered reeds and made baskets and sold them, to help support his family. Then one morning in 1864
while gathering the reeds he slipped into the river and drowned.

Sarah did what she could to keep the family together, but it was hard for a woman to try to raise a family alone. In 1867 Sarah married Isaac Roberts.
