Born in Iowa the son of Almon Bertram Burgess and Ada J Holcomb. He served in the US Army during World War II in the Medical Corps as an ambulance driver. Barney was a airplane pilot and for a time made a living towing advertising banners until the motor seized in his airplane, putting him out of business. He married Nettie Marie (nee Guynn) Kemp and they settled in Pennington, New Jersey. Barney served as a Correction Officer for the New Jersey Department of Corrections at the Trenton State facility. Upon his retirement, Barney and Nettie moved to a condo in Westminster, CA., that was purchased collectively by her four sons, and lived there with Nettie and her son Kenneth L. Kemp. Kenneth died in 1982 and they lived there until Barney's death in 1987.
