Elma Chirikos was the child of Louis Chirikos and Ada Jane Holcomb Burgess. She was born shortly after Ada Jane Holcomb's marriage to Almon Burgess, with whom she had been living with since 1912. Mr. Chirikos was the tenant of the farm on which Almon and Ada Jane Burgess lived/worked. Ada Jane admitted to "improper relations" with Mr. Chirikos prior to her marriage to Almon Burgess. Elma Chirikos was murdered by her mother, who confessed to using morphine. Elma Chirikos was initially buried on the same farm but her body was later "dug up" and both she and her coffin were removed. On 03 Nov 1913 she was found "reburied under a clump of bushes". As of 04 Nov 1913, Almon Burgess was to bring Elma Chirikos to Rockwell (Cerro Gordo, IA) for a proper burial. Louis Chirikos was convicted for his role in the murder on 22 Dec 1913 and sentenced to life in prison shortly thereafter. Ada Jane Holcomb Burgess was found not guilty of murder by invoking an insanity defense. By virtue of this acquittal, Mr. Chirikos applied for a pardon and was subsequently released from an Iowa state prison.

Update: Received information that she was named "Elma Burgess" and death certificate lists the father as "A.B. Burgess" despite testimony by mother that the father was Louis Chirikos. I have not personally confirmed this information. Informant noted that confirmation can be found in Cerro County Courthouse in Mason City, Iowa. It should be understood that a birth or death certificate is not proof positive of parentage; statements in court are sworn, carry penalties for perjury and presumed to be factual.
