Son of Edward Blackshear Coalson and Harriet Amanda Young Coalson.

According to articles in the Houston Daily Post on February 4 and February 6, 1898, Dr Paul Coalson left his home in Houston on Tuesday, February 1, 1898 to go to the country to see about buying a cow. On the way there, he passed the home of E. Ramin near Brays Bayou about four miles from Houston, and and had traveled about two more miles when he started feeling ill. He turned around and went back to the home of E. Ramin and asked to rest there.

He died about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 1898 at the home of E. Ramin. Two doctors had been called to the home before he died and also Mrs Coalson, since Mr Ramin had been unable to awaken Dr Coalson. The doctors called to treat him were unable to save him and an inquest was ordered, during which it was discovered he had taken all the quinine capsules he had obtained from the Lion Pharmacy to treat a cough and was probably accidentally poisoned from the overdose.

His body was taken to his home in Houston, where he and his wife had lived for two and a half years, having moved there from their previous home near Stafford, Fort Bend, Texas.

On February 4, 1898, His body was removed to Richmond, Texas, for interment, accompanied by delegations from the Knights of Pythias and the Order of Red Men. Dr Coalson was a member of both organizations.
