Joyce Clarice Schkade Carleston
April 14, 1933 – September 19, 2006
Joyce Clarice Schkade Carleston was born April 14, 1933 to Edmund E. and Meta (nee) Jatzlau Schkade in Giddings, Texas. In the Giddings Immanuel Lutheran Church she was baptized on April 23, 1933 by RevGeorge Fisher and confirmed on March 30, 1947 by Rev. Max Studtmann. Her confirmation verse was John 10: 27-28. During her high school years, she met the love of her life, Herbert Carleston. She graduated valedictorian from Giddings High School and went on to Blinn College in Brenham for a teaching degree. On August 8, 1954 Joyce united in marriage with Herbert Carleston at Immanuel Lutheran Church by her brother Rev. Ray Schkade. In 1964, the Lord blessed Joyce and Herbert with a daughter, Kimberly Rae. Joyce felt her most important goal in life was to be a good wife and mother. Her love of children made her a much sought after teacher and later substitute teacher and was often asked to work with the children with special needs. She and her husband were with the Pearland Independent School District for most of their married life. They had moved back to Giddings in 1995. Joyce would say her loves were family, music, reading, researching genealogy, and traveling. In 1996 and 1997 she received the most precious gifts of grandchildren in the births of Megan and Max Glattstein. From that time, her summers were spent with Herbert in the Boston, MA area visiting them and her daughter and son-in-law, Seth. Many say she was the definition of a "lady", well-dressed and wonderful hostess; however, Joyce would want to be remembered for wanting the best for her family and working hard for their happiness. The love for family, which to her extended through her brother and his family, her husband's extended family, aunts, uncles, and the many cousins was evident every day with Joyce through her enthusiasm for shopping for presents, cooking and hosting family gatherings, making holidays special occasions, and making sure she attended as many family milestones as possible. Family occasions will never be the same without her. In recent years, her love of family lead to many hours happily spent volunteering for the Lee County Heritage Society, Genealogy group, Wendish Society, and serving on the Lee County Heritage Committee. In addition, she volunteered her time for Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Braille and Caring ministry.
A breast cancer survivor in her twenties, Joyce had a zest for life and new experiences that left others struggling to keep up. Through the lifetime effects of the cancer treatments that lead to heart disease, open-heart surgery, and further illnesses, Joyce continued with the same resilience to experience life to its fullness. Finally, her body could not withstand the complications and Joyce passed away with Herbert and Kimberly at her side on September 19, 2006 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA. She was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew. She is survived by her husband, Herbert of Giddings and her daughter Kimberly with son-in-law Seth Glattstein and Joyce's grandchildren Megan and Max residing in Duxbury, MA. She is also survived by her brother, Rev. Ray Schkade and his wife Kathryn, Aunt Ruth and Uncle Ben Schurmeier, Aunt Ellie Mae Schkade, Herbert's brother John Allen and his wife Helen Carleston. She is also carried in spirit with her nephew and nieces, the Schkade, Churchill, Townsend and Blaha families which she would want us to name every one of them and tell you how special they were to her.
Funeral Services were held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. John Davis, Dr. James Zwernemann and Rev. Ray Schkade officiating. Burial was in the Giddings Memorial Park.
