Herbert Clinton Carleston Jr. died peacefully in the home of his daughter and her family in Duxbury, MA on July 13, 2017 at the age of 83.
Survived by his daughter Kimberly Glattstein, son-in-law Seth and grandchildren Megan and Max, Herbert is lovingly remembered by many relatives and friends including his sister-in-laws Helen Carleston and Kathryn Schkade, nieces Debbie Townsend, Cindy Blaha, Tammy Churchill, and nephews, Craig Schkade and Kevin Schkade.
He is preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years Joyce Schkade Carleston, brother John Carleston of Louise, TX, brother-in-law Rev. Raymond Schkade and parents Herbert and Vivian Carleston of Giddings, TX.
Born in Austin, TX on November 26, 1933 Herbert grew up in Giddings, TX where he was proud to have been part of the Giddings High School 1951 State Championship football team. Herbert played football and graduated with a B.S. in mathematics from Southwest Texas (Texas State). Herbert also received a Masters of School Administration from the University of Houston.
Herbert began his career as teacher and coach in Danbury, TX then spent 34 years in Pearland, TX as a teacher, coach, intermediate school principal, and finishing the last 25 years of his career as an Assistant Superintendent. As a result of his hard work ethic, career accomplishments and community volunteering, Herbert was honored with the naming of Herbert Carleston Elementary School in Pearland ISD.
“Herb” treasured the friendships made during his career.
Herbert loved spending time with family and friends and was the “man behind the camera” capturing many special moments and people in photos and video. He enjoyed playing tennis, fishing, camping, and vegetable gardening. With Joyce they camped throughout the United States, cruised with friends, and after retirement spent the summers camping in the New England area to be close to his daughter and grandchildren. After Joyce’s death in 2006 Herbert continued spending summers in Massachusetts and enjoyed driving his grandchildren and their friends to events and hosting them in his RV.
Upon retirement Herbert and Joyce move to Giddings and built a home on the farm originally purchased by Joyce’s grandfather where now five generations of the Schkade and Carleston family have gathered for holidays and family events. Herbert smoked the best brisket and turkey for many of these occasions. In the last years a new generation of very special friends brought joy and fulfillment to his life and it has resulted in an extended Carleston “family”.
Kimberly and her family especially want to thank Kevin and Debbie Schkade, Philip and Faydra Grimm, Lindsey Reimnitz, Chris Rusch, and Brittany Walters for providing extra support, camping experiences, and traveling companionship during this last season of his life.
Herbert was proud of his Texas heritage, received extra joy from being around children and mentoring young people, was known for his generosity, and made it a priority to stay in touch and often do something special for those who had touched his life.
