The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private James Gunterman (ASN: 1556214), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, A.E.F., at Argenthol, France, 25 July 1918. While charging an enemy machine-gun nest which was holding up the advance of his squad Private Gunterman was mortally wounded, but his heroic deed enabled his comrades to capture the nest.
