Abel married 1st Eunice Spences on 21 February 1805 in Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania. They had 5 children. See Eunice's page for the children.

He was commissioned for service in the War of 1812 and in 1841 was Captain, 3rd Co., 76th Regiment Pennsylvania Militia, 2nd Brigade, 8th Division. He was promoted to Lt. Col. on 16 October 1823.

He was a lumberman, owned two sawmills and a grist mill. He also owned several hundred acres of woodland.

He married 2nd Affa Harding on 5 May 1814 in Springfield, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania.
