Alma Antoinette Abbott died at the age of 96 on Wednesday September 12, 2007 at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington, Kansas. She had been living at the convalescent center in Yates Center for a number of years. Before that she had a house in Yates Center on Grove just north of the United Methodist Church which she had been a faithful member of since the Methodist Church merged to be "United".
She was born July 19, 1911, in Rose Kansas to her parents Carl Victor and Eva Mae (Darst) Abbott. She lived there until 1912 when she moved with her older brother and parents to a farm just outside of Yates Center. Her mother, Eva, was a school teacher before she was married to her father, Carl, and instilled a real sense of respect for the written word in her. She graduated from Yates Center High School.
After her younger sister Barbara Jean was married and bought the family farm from her father, Alma had a house built in town just north of the United Methodist Church. Alma had a green thumb and could make just about anything grow. She had a beautiful garden at her house, which some of the flower bushes are still there. The new owner of the house has done repairs and added a beautiful deck, and I feel that she would love that someone is using and caring for her home and brought life back into it. Having gone through the great depression she had always been concerned with finding a use for everything. I think she would take great pride that her house is being so useful to the new owners.
Alma served as a clerk for the district court for 17 years, and she was a telephone operator for The Bell Telephone Company for years. She was very active with her membership in the United Methodist Church of Yates Center especially the United Methodist Women, along with a number of other organizations for women in which she traveled extensively to conventions for.
At the time of her death her two sisters Barbara Stockebrand of Yates Center and Alice Terrell of Kentland Indiana were alive, they have now passed. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Eva Abbott, and her older brother Clifford Abbott.
She is buried at the Yates Center Cemetery in Section B, where there is a stone that reads "Abbott", and a cement border that surrounds herself, her brother Clifford, and her parents Carl and Eva."
Alma is missed every day by her many loving nieces and nephews (whether they are her sister's children or her sister's grandchildren they all called her Aunt Alma, with at least one calling her Aunt Almo which he adored).
