Was the eighth child of Samuel and Elizabeth Marshall. Married first to Martha D. Hall on July 29, 1840, in Harrison County, Kentucky. Had two children, Martha and James T. January. He married Josephine B. Stephens on September 11, 1848, in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Elected as first mayor of Cynthiana, Kentucky, in 1860.
