Mary Ellen was the daughter of Civil War veteran David Chubb and Susan Schaffner Chubb. On May 10, 1892, she married Harvey Elmer Matter, the son of Enoch and Margaret Ann Reisch Matter of Lykens Valley. Enoch was the brother of Rebecca Matter, the grandmother of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Mary Ellen and Harvey had 5 children.
