SUDDEN PASSING OF A. C. MOFFIT, MONDAY

Aaron C. Moffit died suddenly at his home here at an early hour Monday afternoon, November 29th. He had been apparently in usual health in the morning but later complained of a severe pain in the region of his heart. A physician was called and administered treatment, which brought relief. The doctor realizing the seriousness of the trouble advised the patient that he could not safely do any more work. Only a short time passed when the patient complained the pain seemed to be returning. An instant later life departed. Death was due to angina pectoria. The unwelcome news spread rapidly throughout the community and occasioned a general feeling of sorrow and regret that the life of this good man had ebbed out.

In his death the community lost one of its most honored citizens, who was loved and respected by everyone. The Presbyterian church has lost one of its loyal and consistent members and supporters. He was one of the few local surviving veterans of the Civil War and for years was commander of the Princeville G.A.R. Post which position he occupied up until the time of his death. He was one of the "Lucky Thirteen" enlisting from Princeville at the outbreak of the war who survived.

Many Years Here

Aaron C. Moffit, eldest son of Edward and Sarah Moffit, was born May 3rd, 1840 in Woodford County, Illinois where he resided until 15 years of age when he removed to Peoria County. With the exception of a few months spent in Iowa, he spent the remainder of his life in or near Princeville. In 1866 he was united in marriage with Ruth Harrison, who died in 1871. He was again united in marriage on May 1, 1873 to Mary J. Rowcliff, who died January 29th, 1886.

Aaron Moffit's War Record

Following is a brief account of his war record.
He was mustered as a member of Co. H, 47th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers Infantry, September 1st, 1861 and was transferred to Co. B., Nov. 17, 1864. He was appointed Second Sergeant Feb. 11, 1865. During this time he was engaged in 16 different battles as follow:
New Madrid, Missouri, March 13th, 1862
Island No.16, April 7, 1862
Farmington, Miss, May 9, 8162
Corinth, Miss., May 23rd, 1862
Corinth, Miss., October 3 and 4, 1862
Jackson, Miss, May 14, 1863
Charge on Vicksburg, Miss., May 22, 1863
Capture of Ft. DeRussey, March 14, 1864
Pleasant Hill, April 9, 1864
Cane River, April 25, 1864
Mausura Prairie, Louisiana, May 16, 1864
Yellow Bayou, Louisiana, May 18, 1864
Lake Chicot, Ark., June 6, 1864
Abbyville, Miss., August, 23rd, 1864
Siege of Spanish Fort, Alabama on March 27th to April 5th, 1865
He was mustered out January 21st, 1866

Funeral This Afternoon

To very few men has been given the honor of so valiant a service for his country, with such a splendid recode of military achievement. His life was one of service like that of his Savior who came to minister. A great man has fallen in our midst. He was mustered out of military service with honors and after a life of more than 80 years, final muster came and called him to his comrades both in service and in life, who preceded him in the final muster. And we who look on and wait are saying with the younger prophet of old "The Chariots of Israel and the Horseman Thereof."

Mr. Moffit is survived by the following children: Ella of Princeville, with whom he made his home; Susan McKown of Farmington, Minn., Fred H. Moffit of Washington, D.C. and Dr. Albert Moffit of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The funeral service in charge of pastor, Rev. John Acheson, was held at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church where a large number assembled to pay a last tribute of honor and respect. The music was by Mrs. Silas Willard and Mrs. H. W. Matthews.

The pallbearers were H. J. Cheeseman, Allen C. Fast, Richard Cox, Joe c. Friedman, John Friedman and E. C. Tracy.

Interment was in the Princeville cemetery.
