Mary Ellen Hitt, 84 of Higginsville, formerly of Corder, Missouri passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021, at Meyer Care Center in Higginsville, Missouri.
She was born Monday, June 29, 1936 in Marshall, Missouri and was the daughter of the late George Griffit and the late Mary (Dollard) Griffit. Mary Ellen married Robert Ray Hitt on February 2, 1957, and they spent 35 years together. He preceded her in death on March 16, 1992.
Mary Ellen worked as a cook for the Lafayette County C-1 school district from 1978-2001. She also worked as a cook for the I-70 hospital in Sweet Springs, MO, and ten years for Meyer Care Center in the kitchen. She was a member of the Corder United Methodist Church and she served on the board for the Calvary Cemetery in Corder. Mary Ellen was a member of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She will be remembered as a loving mother, a doting grandmother, and an adoring great-grandmother. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends, and anyone who came to know her.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Ruth (Dan) Harp of Higginsville; two sons, Gordon (Patti) Hitt of Mayview, MO, Ronald (Jane) Hitt of Desloge, MO; one brother, Jim Griffit of Warrensburg, MO; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Thomas (Hollis Gemes) of Warrensburg, Jessica (Chris) Johnson of Higginsville, Morgan (Tommy) Fitzwater of Higginsville, Hayden Hitt of Higginsville, Cory (Stephanie) Harp of Clinton, MO, Ashley (Terry) Smith of Amity, MO, Caleb Ireland of Gallatin, MO; eleven great-grandchildren, Catherine Mary Gemes, Matthew Gemes, Daniel Gemes, Cheyenne Brown, Mathias Johnson, Langston Johnson, Andrew Harp, Max Harp, Emma Harp, Levy Smith, Jayce Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Robert.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 8, 2021 at the Corder United Methodist Church with a visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery. Casket Bearers: Gordon Hitt, Ronald Hitt, Dan Harp, Hayden Hitt, Chris Johnson, Hollis Gemes. Honorary Casket Bearers: Tommy Fitzwater, Cory Harp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Calvary Cemetery or Corder United Methodist Church.
