Wilma Jean Barnett Sykes was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on Thursday, December 31, 2020, surrounded by her children. Wilma Jean was born May 29, 1930 in Tillman County, OK, to Frank Stafford and Ida Wilma (Wood) Barnett. She attended school at Frederick OK and graduated high school at Victory Consolidated School #11. At Cameron Jr. College in Lawton, OK, Wilma met her soulmate Dee Laverne Sykes, and they were married in Davidson, Ok on September 1, 1948. Wilma and Dee had four children, Katherine, Verna, Kevin, and Anita.
When her two oldest daughters went to school, Wilma worked at Carnation Milk Company in Wichita Falls, TX. She then was a helpmate to Dee as they farmed north of Wichita Falls. Wilma worked in the insurance industry and contract services at SAFB. She is fondly remembered for her handwork and sewing skills, and made many a wedding dress for girls in the Burkburnett area. Wilma and Dee owned and operated The Sewing Box for many years, and she used her seamstress skills for many members of the Burkburnett community.
Wilma was a member of First Baptist Church in Burkburnett, TX, where she assisted on many committees in the church, was a member of Women’s Missionary Union, and loved singing in the choir. After retirement, Wilma and Dee joined the Retirement Ministry of the Southern Baptist Convention. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Frederick and Burkburnett, and served as Worthy Matron several times.
Wilma’s grandchildren, great-grands, and great-great grand were the light of her life. She and Dee welcomed all of them into their home, and taught them farm-life skills, sewing skills, and their faith in Jesus Christ. If asked their favorite memory about Grandma Wilma, the grands’ popular answer is her country cooking: goulash, fried potatoes, fried chicken and gravy, and her chocolate sheet cake.
Wilma’s love for her extended family included her four brothers and their families. They said “she is the best big sister ever”, and “pretty sure she could do no wrong.” They loved to tease her so they could hear her laugh. Wilma was the instigator of the Barnett and Wood family reunions to continue those family ties for her children.
Wilma Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Dee Laverne Sykes; her mother, Wilma Barnett; her father, Frank Barnett; her stepmother, Florence Barnett; her brother, Roger Barnett; and her step-sister, Janet Nicks.
Survivors include: her children, Kathy (Jeff) Barfield, Verna (Allen) Farris, Kevin (Lori) Sykes, and Anita (Larry) Marsh; eleven grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one unborn great-grandchild, and one unborn great-great grandchild; her brothers, David (Kay) Barnett, James (Karen) Barnett, Stan (Jo Ellen) Barnett; sister-in-law, Annita Barnett; brother-in-law, Wayne (Gloria) Sykes; sister-in-law, Wynonah Randall; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
A public viewing will be held Friday, January 8, 2021, from 1pm – 7pm at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home in Burkburnett. Due to Covid 19, there will be no public funeral services.
