Carmon V. Cripe, 87, of Middlebury, passed away at 12:55 am on Thursday, December 31 at Courtyard of Goshen.

He was born on September 23, 1933 in Elkhart to Grover and Irene (Plank) Cripe. On January 26, 1952 in Elkhart County, he married Margaret Muhlnickel, she died April 22, 2020.

Surviving are daughter, Kristi (Douglas) Edlund of Middlebury; two sons, Kevin (Karen) Cripe of Perkasie, PA, Kerry (Bonnie) Cripe of Goshen; six grandchildren, Joel (Melissa) Cripe, Kim (Josh) Cassel, Mason (Ashley) Edlund, Andrew (Ashley) Edlund, Aaron (Megan) Cripe, Mandy (Jason) DeMien; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerry (Marjorie) Cripe of Ocala, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Grover Blosser and wife. Carmon was a member of Middlebury Church of the Brethren and had graduated from Middlebury High School in 1951. He was the manager of Blosser Lumber for 8 years and worked at Heritage Middle School from the opening in 1974 until retiring in 1995. The school created the Carmon Cripe Award which is bestowed annually to one boy and one girl who excels in both academics and athletics. In 2006 he was inducted into the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame; in 2005 he and his wife received the Book of Golden Deeds Award and in 2006 were the Middlebury Summer Festival Parade Marshals. He was heavily involved in local high school sports, including being a timer for Northridge basketball games for over 30 years, a starter for track and cross-country events, a volleyball official, a football line judge and a IHSAA official from 1976 to 2003. In 2000 he received the Fox 28 Marv Wood Memorial. He also served as camp counselor at Camp Mack and has created thousands of wooden silhouette cutouts from newspaper photos. He and his wife were also known around the community for their many appearances as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday, January 5, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street Middlebury. Private funeral services will be held. Services will be conducted by Pastor Janet Shaver. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury. Memorials may be given to Northridge Athletic Fund or Middlebury Church of the Brethren.
