Lafayette was the eldest child of Benjamin Atkisson and Mary Catherine Kirk. According to his obituary in the Aug. 14, 1902 edition of the Cassville Republican:

"Lafayette Atkisson was a native Missourian, born at Ozark, May 15, 1846. Ten years later he came to this county with his parents, locating at a farm near Madry, which he left when he moved to Cassville in 1895, and which had been his home for nearly forty years.

During the war Mr. Atkisson was a member of Co. K., 46 Mo. Inf. Vol, under Capt. Sullivan, in Col. Fyan's regiment in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. For a time he was mail dispatcher between Springfield and Cassville. He returned from Springfield soon enough after the skirmish near Madry between Capt. Roberts' company and Price's command, as they were retreating south after raiding Missouri, to assist in burying the dead.

In May 1886 Mr. Atkisson was nominated by the Republicans for county clerk but was defeated at the polls. In 1894 he was again nominated and was successful at the polls over the same man who beat him in 1886. He then moved from his farm to Cassville, made a clean and honorable record as a county official and in 1899 he again moved to his farm near Madry. A few months ago he disposed of his property and invested at Marionville at which place he died."

On February 11, 1866, in Barry County he married Rachel Margaret Smith and they had nine children of record: Francis, Fannie, Albert, Marshall, Ida, Robert, William, Claud, and Bama.
