Sports Figure. He was a Scottish athlete, who was considered to be the "The Nineteenth Century's Greatest Athlete" with a career spanning over 50 years, and including over 11,000 successful competitions. In addition to being the Highland Games Champion from 1856 to 1876 and labelled 'The World's Strongest Man', his achievements worldwide consisted of 2,000 hammer throwing contests, over 2,000 wrestling matches, 200 weightlifting contests, and about 500 running and hurdle events. He made a good living at all this, earning at least £25,000 in his career. To this day, the "Dinnie Stones" at Potarch in Aberdeenshire are a trial of strength with challengers coming from all over the world. Although he died in London, he was highly regarded in the United States and an obituary appeared in the the New York Times. In 2002, he was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.
