Former Gonzalian Passes Away At Huntsville
News was received in Gonzales Thursday night of the death of Mr. Wm. P. Matthews, which occurred at the home of his son, Rev. Wm. H. Matthews, in Huntsville, Texas, on Tuesday night, after an illness pf less than one hour. The immediate cause of his death was heart trouble, although he had been in poor health for some time past. at the time of his death the decedent was 69 years of age. He was well known in this county, where he spent his boyhood, and young manhood and is remembered by most of the older residents. After leaving Gonzales he resided in West Texas for a number of years, where he engaged in the cattle business. For several years he had been residing with his son, who is now located in Huntsville, Texas, as pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Besides the son above mentioned, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Ella Walker, also of Huntsville. At the time of his death Mr. Matthews was a consistent Christian, having untied with the Presbyterian church several years ago, and when the end drew near, he was ready to go to meet the Savior in whom he had placed his trust, and whom he had tried so faithfully to serve. The sincere sympathy of the many friends of the family here go out to the sorrowing ones in their bereavement.
