Obituary in The Tribune, Scranton, PA, Nov 8, 1948:
Mrs. Elizabeth Root Luce, 77, mother of Henry R. Luce, editor-in-chief of Time, Life and Fortune magazines, and a former YWCA secretary here, died in Haverford Saturday.
A native of New Hartford, N.Y., Mrs. Luce came to this city in 1895 to accept a position wIth the
YWCA. A year later, she married the Rev. Dr. Henry Winters Luce, a native of this city, who was prominent in activities of the Second Presbyterian Church here.
In 1897, Mrs. Luce and her husband went to China and remained there 25 years as missionaries and educators. Their mission was sponsored by the Second Presbyterian Church. Dr. Luce died in 1943.
Besides her son, Henry, Mrs. Luce is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leslie Severinghaus, headmaster at Haverford School; Mrs. Maurice Moore, New York City, and a son, Sheldon Luce, in California.
The funeral will be held in New Hartford Thursday.
