Mary Mitzie Beckom Abernathy, 81, of Hickory, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Catawba Regional Hospice.

Born March 23, 1933 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Everette W. Beckom, Sr. and Lucille Boland Beckom.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband: Reid E. Laffon; second husband: William R. Abernathy; son: Rev. Michael R. Laffon; brother: Harold Gene Beckom; and a nephew: Lancer Gene Beckom.

She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 60 years and had served two terms as President of the W.E.L.C.A., as a teacher, church hostess and office volunteer. Mitzie was a 1955 graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and taught at both Sweetwater Elementary School and later at CVCC, teaching GED courses. She also worked with the family business, Nelly Bee Products. She was a past Matron of the Eastern Star, as well as, past Mother Advisor to the Rainbow Girls and in general a volunteer to the community.

She is survived by her son, William-Patrick H. Abernathy of Hickory, NC; three brothers: Everette W. Beckom, Jr. and wife Hilda of Hickory, NC, James D. Beckom, Sr. and wife Lynn of Hickory, NC, Larry Joe Beckom of Lenoir, NC; sisters-in-law: Betty Laffon of Hickory, NC, Faye Lail and husband Joe of Maiden, NC, Helen Huffman of Hickory, NC, Jynell Abernathy of Maiden, NC; a cousin, Faye Bowen of Burlington, NC; two namesakes: Mary Beckom Roberts of Savannah, GA, Mitzie Beckom Cline of Vale, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015 with the Rev. William B. Miller-Zurrell officiating and a reception will follow at the church.
